All diabetics need an annual comprehensive foot exam by a Podiatrist to check for possible sore spots and to check nerve sensation. This non-invasive testing and exam is “required” by the American Diabetes Association. As an expert in all aspects of foot an ankle care, your Podiatrist is uniquely qualified to perform this examination. You should of course continue to be monitored by your primary care physician. Your Podiatrist will coordinate your foot care with your primary care doctor to help prevent serious complications.
All qualifying diabetics with Medicare are entitled to one replacement pair of shoes and three pairs of inserts per year at little to no cost. These shoes must be prescribed by a physician and fit by a qualified individual, such as a certified Podiatrist.
