WHAT IS THE BEST BUNION SURGERY FOR YOU?
By Dr. Christopher Milkie of Milwaukee Foot & Ankle Specialists of Milwaukee, WI

Many of our patients complain about their bunions. Whether it is from the pain, or the appearance of their feet, most of these patients want to do something to take care of the problem. It is important to recognize that all bunions are not created equal. There are a variety of treatments and many different procedures your podiatrist can use to treat your specific bunion.

In mild cases, a procedure known as a Austin Bunionetomy may be used. In its simplest definition, the podiatrist will shave down the boney prominence near your big toe, minimizing the bunion. This, however, is not – and cannot – be a treatment for every bunion.

Can a bunion come back after surgery? In the case of a more severe bunion, the boney protrusion may only be a symptom of a much larger problem. In these situations, only shaving down the bone will likely allow the bunion to return in a few years. The true issue here is not the boney prominence but instead, an increased angle between your forefoot bones, known as your metatarsals. Correcting this angle will alleviate both the immediate problem, and the possible recurrence of your bunion. There are many surgical procedures currently used to fix this. To many podiatrists, the correct choice and implementation of each procedure is an art form, and it is one your Milwaukee, WI podiatrist is experienced in.

Overall, it is important to remember that each bunion is different. Each case may require a different type of treatment to allow for optimal results. Our Milwaukee, WI podiatrists are specially trained in choosing and using the correct method to help you get rid of your bunion for good. Set up an appointment today so that we may help you say farewell to your bunion!
