Pain and soreness in the the ball of the foot is known as Metatarsalgia. For many people, it is caused by instability in the joints of the smaller toes. Overuse, including frequent sprains and overstretched ligaments can lead to increased flexibility in these joints. For an athlete, years of overuse and extreme motion in the foot can increase flexibility and may cause subluxation – a partial dislocation of these joints. Treatments include the RICE protocol (Rest, Ice, Compression, Elevation), and the use of metatarsal pads and or custom orthotics to absorb shock and support the foot. Those with very flexible joints in the foot may find a shoe with a less flexible sole to be more comfortable.
