HOW EXERCISE & WEIGHT LOSS CAN HELP YOU (AND YOUR FEET)
By Dr. Christopher Milkie of Milwaukee Foot & Ankle Specialists of Milwaukee, WI

Did you know that the most popular New Year’s resolution may benefit your health in more ways than you can imagine? That’s right, losing a little weight does more for you body than simply changing how it looks. Even if you don’t need to lose weight, making healthy food choices along with exercise can help everyone’s body, mind, and soul.

Here at Milwaukee Foot Specialists we are most concerned with your feet and maintaining a healthy weight can truly benefit an aching body. Dropping the extra pounds takes away some of the added weight that your feet have to bear each and every day, making them a little less sore. Patients dealing with plantar fasciitis or arthritis, for example, may benefit greatly by taking that extra stress off of their feet.

Many of our patients are diabetic and managing weight along with the disease can truly be a struggle. What you may not know however, is that many patients who can maintain a controlled exercise and weight loss program will see improvement in their diabetic condition! Blood sugars, as well as HgA1c will be more manageable resulting in the need for less medication (and therefore fewer side-effects). The same can also be said with patients dealing with hypertension and high cholesterol.

Of course, it is important to note that losing weight IS NOT FOR EVERYONE. Please be sure to check with your doctor before starting a weight loss program so that you can learn about a healthy weight for someone of your age, sex, height, and lifestyle. Dieting is not the same for everyone and anyone planning to diet should consult with their doctor, a dietician, and even a personal trainer. A physical therapist can also help treat nagging muscle or joint injuries. All of this being said, almost everyone could benefit from an increase in daily activity, so… go for that walk! If your feet are hurting you too much to begin or continue your program, set up an appointment today with us here at Milwaukee Foot Specialists.
