We all hear about diabetics losing toes, feet, and even their leg. However, it is very unusual for a diabetic to have a leg amputated due to blocked blood vessels – unless they smoke. Smoking slows down the circulation in smaller blood vessels, like those in your feet and lower legs. Combine this with poor circulation caused by diabetes, and you have a high risk. Tobacco use can also slow healing, making the ulcers and infections that can lead to amputation worse.
