FLAT FEET IN CHILDREN – WHEN SHOULD THEY BE TREATED?
By Dr. Christopher Milkie of Milwaukee Foot & Ankle Specialists of Milwaukee, WI

A podiatric problem that is common in children is flat feet or “pes planus”. This issue can develop at any age and there are a variety of factors that will allow our children to develop flat feet. Flat feet can lead to many complications which relate to a flat foot’s tendency to move in an abnormal biomechanical position termed “pronated”. The pronated position is a position in which the foot is tilted outwards causing the normal arch to flatten to the ground. Pronation is a normal biomechanical position at specific times during movement. A flat foot however, may become pronated at the incorrect times or even over-pronated at other times.

To determine whether or not you or your children have flat feet you should look at the foot’s arch while standing. Check to see if there is an arch on the inside of your foot. If this portion of your foot, where a arch normally is, touches the ground while standing or weight bearing… you have a flat foot!

Flat feet can sometimes be symptom free. In these cases, nothing needs to be done! However not everyone is so lucky. A flat foot can put stress on parts of the body that are not developed to handle it. For example, flat feet can decrease the foots ability to absorb shock. Without the foot’s natural tendency to absorb shock the stress of each and every step can be transferred to another part of the body. This means that your flat foot could be causing knee pain, hip pain, and even back pain.

So what should you do? Set up an appointment today! We can evaluate your feet, and in most cases of pes planus, prescribe the appropriate treatment to help you out. Orthotics and physical therapy are both very beneficial for patients with flat feet. Both of these treatments and many more can be found here at Milwaukee Foot Specialists in Milwaukee, Wisconsin (WI)!
