Don’t Let Foot Or Ankle Pain Keep You From Winning The Gold
By Dr. Steven Waldman of Milwaukee Foot & Ankle Specialists of Milwaukee, WI

I doubt that anyone needs to be told that the health of the feet and ankles are essential to athletic performance. Even more so for elite athletes such as those in the 2012 Summer Olympics. The ankle joint connects the lower leg to the foot. It allows for pointing the toe (plantar flexion) and flexing the foot (dorsiflexion). The ankle also allows for inversion and eversion, or turn-in and turn-out. The 26 bones in the foot work in tandem with muscles and ligaments to create 3 separate arches, which are critical for shock absorption during jumps and landings.

This complex machine can break down – athletes are prone to many common injuries of the foot and ankle, from plantar fasciitis (heel pain) to ankle sprains. British marathon runner Paula Radcliffe, known as her country’s greatest distance runner ever, and current holder of the marathon world record, did not compete due to a left foot injury. “My sport is a beautiful sport, it gives so much fun and enjoyment, I believe helps me to be a better person, and I have been very fortunate to experience some great success and have so many beautiful and happy memories. However, the downside is that it can break your heart and spirit many times over when your body is simply unable to match what your heart and brain want it to do,” said Radcliffe. Keeping your feet and ankles in good shape, recognizing injuries when they occur, and seeking proper treatment from a Milwaukee WI podiatrist can keep you moving without pain.
