CHOICES FOR TOENAIL FUNGUS TREATMENT
By Dr. Christopher Milkie of Milwaukee Foot & Ankle Specialists of Milwaukee, WI
Ready for summer, but toenail fungus making you hide your feet? Milwaukee Foot and Ankle Specialists has many treatment options for fungal toenails. There are a lot of choices, and even strange home remedies, available to try and clear out those ugly, yellow toenails. Unfortunately, due to the nature of a toenail, fungus within a nail is pretty tough to treat. However, we can work with you to learn what you have tried before and what options we can offer you.
The go-to option is an oral pill called Lamisil, whose active drug is known as Turbinafine. This drug is very powerful in clearing out toenail fungus. However, it will not clear out a nail that is already fungal. What it will do is allow for the nail that grows in to be completely healthy. This can be deceiving as toenails can take 6 months to a complete year to fully grow in! Another thing to watch out for with Lamisil is the fact that it can be tough on your liver. In otherwise healthy patients, it is nothing to worry about, but if you have any liver disease, Lamisil may not be for you.
Other options for toenail fungus include topical options, including a nail lacquer that can be applied to the nails daily. As the lacquer builds up on the nail, it begins to penetrate into the nail bed and attack the fungus. The lacquer is then removed once a week and daily applications continue. Though not as highly effective as Lamisil, a topical nail lacquer is much easier on the rest of your body and a great alternative for patients with liver disease.
Taking It All Off
Lastly, if you are the type of patient that simply has had enough, we can actually remove the toenail completely! Though this is usually reserved for patients whose nails have significant pathology, completely removing fungal nails along with the use of anti-fungal treatments while the new nail is growing back in has a good probability of resulting in a new healthy nail. Nail removal is not an option for patients with underlying peripheral vascular disease or any other condition that may limit their ability to heal.
Overall fungal toenails are very tough to treat, and in today’s blog, we only began to scratch the surface of treatment options available to our patients.
