Of course you want to avoid harm! But what does HARM stand for? Let’s take a look at what you should avoid for the 72 hours after your ankle injury.
Avoid saunas, hot tubs, hot baths, and heat packs for at least 72 hours. Heat can increase inflammation and bruising, so stay away from it at first. Once inflammation has gone down, heat can be soothing, so after the 72 hour mark, it’s okay to try using heat.
Drinking alcohol thins the blood, so swelling and bleeding could increase while also slowing down the healing process.
Running increases the likelihood that more damage will be done and/or re-injury can occur. Your ankle needs time to heal before you go for your next run, so you may have to settle for less strenuous exercise for a while.
For the first 72 hours after injury, massage can increase swelling and bleeding. Once that 72 hour mark has gone by, though, massage may be soothing, so don’t rule it out completely. Just don’t use it as part of your immediate treatment plan for your sprained ankle.
