Hallux Rigidus is simply a stiff big toe; a big toe (metatarsophalangeal, or MTP joint) joint that does not bend well and causes pain. This joint bending is an important part of the motion that your foot goes through when you walk or run. It is one of the most common disorders of this important joint. Hallux Rigidus can be caused by an injury, arthritis, gout, or just simply wear and tear. It can also be genetic – meaning that this problem runs in your family. The pain can have various causes, such as cartilage damage. It is most common in people aged 30 to 60.
