Approximately 30% of neuropathy cases are caused by complications from diabetes. For another 30% of cases, the causes of neuropathy are unknown or “idiopathic.”
The remaining neuropathy cases are related to the many medical conditions, drugs, and toxins that are known to cause nerve damage. These include human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection, celiac disease, trauma, amyloidosis, Fabry’s disease, medications or chemotherapy, heavy alcohol consumption, and autoimmune conditions, such as lupus and vasculitis.
