Hammertoes are often genetic. They can also be caused by injury, or diseases such as neuropathy, arthritis, and stroke. Hammertoes can also be caused or exacerbated by your shoe choices. Shoes that crowd the toes, such as high heels, or any that are too tight to allow your toes to lay flat, can cause this condition to develop. Initially, the toes will lie flat when not pushed, but the tendons can eventually contract. The toe will lose flexibility and continue to stay in the stiff, claw-like position of a hammertoe.
