Podiatrist in Milwaukee, WI, Offers Spring Sandals “Do’s & Don’ts”

podiatrist-in-milwaukee-wi-sandals-dos-dontsIt’s that time of year again, and our podiatrist in Milwaukee, WI, knows that you are probably happily digging through closets to pull out last year’s sandals. Before you slip on those old flip-flops, however, Milwaukee Foot & Ankle Specialists has some tips about sensible sandals wear this season.

#1) Is it Time for a New Pair of Sandals?

Most people hold on to their old pairs of flip-flops way beyond their intended “shelf life.” Can you bend your pair of sandals in half? If so, it’s time to shop for new ones. While your sandals need to be flexible, we suggest looking for a pair that have a slight heel or wedge to provide some much needed support for the muscles and tendons in your feet and ankle.

Don’t Sacrifice Foot Health for Fashion, Says Our Podiatrist in Milwaukee, WI!

While sandals are available in every color and can be adorned with accessories like sequins, fur, feathers, and sparkling “jewels,” we recommend going for a high quality sandals to avoid unnecessary blisters. In addition, an inexpensive plastic strap or shoe material may end up digging into your toes or heel and cause uncomfortable irritation.

If sandals will be your main type of footwear this season, a good fit is also important. Make sure your heel doesn’t hang off the back, but be sure to leave some extra wiggle room as your feet may swell in hot weather.

(Fashion tip note – Do you like to wear socks with your sandals? That falls under the “Don’t” column!)

Mowing the Lawn? Not in Sandals!

Don’t risk accident or injury to your feet, cautions our podiatrist in Milwaukee, WI. It is important to wear closed shoes when you are doing any yard work, especially when you are operating equipment like a lawnmower, trimmer, or leaf blower. In addition, if you are participating in any sporting activities, a closed shoe offers more support than a flimsy sandal to prevent a painful ankle turn – and the end to your backyard badminton tournament!

DO Wear Sandals in the Locker Room!

Wearing sandals in wet areas like around pools or locker rooms is a good way to help you avoid plantar wars and athlete’s foot.
