Can you catch toenail fungus from a pedicure? Unfortunately, the answer is yes. We see many patients who have caught toenail fungus or other infections from a visit to a nail salon. How do you know that your salon is clean, and that you are getting a safe pedicure? One tip is to bring your own tools to each visit, or look for salons that will keep each customer’s unique tools separate and labeled for your next visit. Look for shared tools that are being sterilzed in an autoclave or proper disinfectant (typically turquoise colored liquid). Do not permit excessive cuticle cutting or any other treatment that is painful – scrapes and cuts increase the chance of infection. Watch to make sure that the foot baths are cleaned and sprayed down with disinfectant between each customer.
