A common cause of your balance loss may be chronic ankle instability.
Chronic ankle instability can be caused by a variety of pathologies. Issues arising from an old ankle injury that may have never healed correctly, overuse, or congenital issues may be to blame The cause of instability may be ligamentous, muscular, osseous (in the bone), or even neurologic. Examination by one of our specialists will help to diagnose, and address the cause of the problem.
There are many options to the treatment of chronic ankle instability. Of course there are surgical options (a conversation for another time) but another great treatment option is the use of a custom made AFO. An AFO or Ankle Foot Orthosis, is a custom made orthotic that runs from along the bottom of the foot to up across the ankle.
The orthotic is made custom to your foot by making a cast of the foot, or taking a scan which can help send information about your foot to a lab. The orthotic then is made specific to your foot and ankle to help support you while you move, providing stability and comfort to your feet and ankles. If ankle pain is taking its toll on your day to day life, this, and many other conservative and surgical treatment options may be available to you.
